People should be cared for in safe and accessible surroundings that support their health and welfare (outcome 10)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are in safe, accessible surroundings that promote their wellbeing.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 18 October 2013, observed how people were being cared for and checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care. We talked with people who use the service, talked with carers and / or family members and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People who use the service, staff and visitors were protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises.

Reasons for our judgement

During our inspection we walked around the premises and reviewed records relating to the maintenance of the home.

Old Roselyon Manor can accommodate up to 30 people. The building is spread out over two floors with access via a lift and stair lifts. There are two lounges and a dining room on the ground floor. People who lived at the home told us their rooms were “comfortable”, and one person told us they had been able to bring some of their own furniture from home to use in their bedroom.

We reviewed the health and safety certificates and saw there was a robust system in place to ensure the people who lived and worked at the home were protected.

The provider had used external companies to test and service the lifting equipment, including, the lift, hoists and stair lift. Periodic services had also taken place for the gas and electrical appliances.

One member of staff was responsible for the fire risk assessments in the property and to ensure staff were aware of what to do in the event of the fire through regular fire drills. All the records were comprehensive and up to date.

We saw the home was well maintained, clean and tidy with no offensive odours.
