18 June 2013

During a routine inspection

We visited Willow Grange Care Home on 18 June 2013. Nobody knew we would be visiting. During our visit we spoke with people living in the home, four visiting relatives, two visiting health professionals, four care staff, the cook and the manager. We also spent time observing how staff supported people around the home. Comments we received from people included:

'I think X is having excellent care. They are very caring.'

'I liked it ever since I started ' the first day.'

'I think it has improved since X first came. At first they didn't seem very welcoming. Lately we have seen an improvement.'

Care plans were detailed and provided staff with sufficient information to deliver care in a way people preferred. Risk assessments were in place to assess and manage any risks identified. Records confirmed that people and their families were involved in planning and reviewing their care and had signed to consent to the care and support provided.

The service had systems in place to ensure medication was administered safely.

We were satisfied the service had good recruitment procedures and checks in place to ensure staff they employed were safe to work with vulnerable people. Newly recruited staff completed full induction training.

The service had processes in place to gather the views of the people as to the quality of the service provided.

5 October 2012

During a routine inspection

We spoke to people living at Willow Grange, but many only gave limited responses to the questions asked. We spoke with two of the people living there in some depth, together with three visiting relatives. Those spoken with told us they were satisfied with the level of care they were receiving. One person told us, "We are well looked after." One relative said, "The standard of care is very good."

We saw that people and their families were involved in planning and reviewing their care needs. Care plans were clear as to the help and support people required to maintain their wellbeing. They contained detail about people's backgrounds, preferences, likes and dislikes. This enabled staff to deliver care in a way people preferred. We saw people were supported to remain as independent as possible. One staff member said, "Anything they can do we try and encourage them to do it for themselves."

We saw that there were enough staff on duty to support people. Records showed that staff had completed appropriate training. People spoke positively about the level of care provided by staff. One relative said, " I think the care they get is actual care and not just because they are paid to do it."

Staff were clear as to what steps they would take if they witnessed or suspected abuse. One person told us, "I do feel really safe here."

We found there were good standards of hygiene and infection control within the home which looked clean and well maintained.

19 March 2012

During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we visited Willow Grange on 19 March 2012, the people we spoke to were positive about the care they received. One person told us 'I like it here'. Another person who was receiving respite care said 'It's alright here; the staff are kind'. A visitor spoke about their mother: 'She is very happy. The staff are so lovely to her. She enjoys the entertainment. She loves her food and she has gained weight since she came here. I cannot fault it'.

25 April 2011

During an inspection in response to concerns

We visited the home on 19 April 2011. We spoke to four people who lived at the home. We spoke to two relatives about the care given in the home. Some people living at the home have communication difficulties. This limited the amount of discussion we could have with them.
