During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spent time in various parts of the home, including communal areas and individual bedrooms so that we could observe the direct care, attention and support that people who live at this home receive. People were very happy living at The Heathers and the atmosphere was calm and relaxed.

Significant improvements had been made following out visit in January 2012 and people were very positive about their experiences. Comments included, 'I cannot believe the change in people, it's so lovely to see how people's wellbeing has improved', 'It's great to see the investment that has been made so that people receive quality care' and 'I am very happy living here and I really cant complain'. A member of staff told us 'I enjoy coming to work now and I feel proud',

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Following a review in November 2011 serious concerns about the care, welfare and safety of people were identified. In December and January we continued to monitor and review the service by visiting the home. The purpose of the reviews were to check that people's needs were being met and to ensure they were safe and protected. Although compliance actions had not been fully met the home had taken suitable steps to help promote peoples health and safety.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We spent some time in the company of people living in the home and spoke with them individually. One person told us that they liked being on their own and only socialised with people during events that were held in the home. One person said that staff were kind to them.

Many people were unable to communicate with us due to their frailty and diagnosis of dementia, however they acknowledged us and we took opportunities to unobtrusively observe them.

We saw that most staff interacted in a caring way and people responded to this. Not all interactions we saw were positive and some people we observed had little meaningful social interaction as staff were focused on tasks.
