All Inspections

10 December 2013

During a routine inspection

When we inspected there were 18 people living in the home. We spoke with seven people who used the service and four staff. We also made our own observations during the visit.

People who used the service told us they were satisfied with the service they received. People felt the staff supported them and met their needs. One person who used the service said "it's nice here."

People told us that staff treated them with dignity and respect. One person said 'I choose what to do.' We saw staff speaking and responding to people in a kind and respectful manner.

The care records showed us that people's health needs had been assessed before they came to live in the home. These records included information from health and social care professionals which helped ensure people got the care and treatment they needed.

Staff records showed that staff were regularly supervised and supported to develop into their care role. The home trained their staff and had procedures which protected people from any form of abuse. People told us they did not have any complaints but would speak to the manager or staff if they had any concerns. One person said 'I would go and see the manager or her deputy.'

The service ensured people were provided with nourishing meals and regular drinks to keep hydrated.

The evidence we collected showed us the service kept people safe and met their care needs.

During a routine inspection

Accommodation was provided in four units for 16 people with three self contained flats on the first floor. We spoke with ten people and six members of staff. People told us they were kept well informed about the home. One person said, "they overload us with information" and another said, "they keep us up to date with what's going on". We observed people being treated respectfully, professionally and sensitively.

People's needs were assessed and their care plans were person centred reflecting their wishes and the way in which they wanted to be supported. People told us they talked to their key workers about their likes and dislikes. Action was being taken in response to accidents and incidents. People had access to a range of social and health care professionals.

Systems were in place to safeguard people from harm or abuse. People told us they felt "safe as houses" and had "no concerns, if I did I would talk to my key worker". Staff confirmed they had completed training in the local safeguarding procedures. People had access to information about 'keeping safe' and how to make a complaint.

People told us staff "are ok" and "they look after me well". We found that there were sufficient staff scheduled to work with the appropriate skills and knowledge. Systems were in place to maintain staffing levels in emergencies such as sickness.

Comprehensive quality assurance processes were in place which included obtaining feedback from people and their representatives.
