During a routine inspection

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use services, carried out on a visit on 28th January 2014, observed how people were cared for and talked to staff and relatives.

People's needs were assessed and care plans were clear and individualised, reflecting the needs of people who use services. Staff plan activities and people were taken out regularly and some people were able to go out independently.

One person told us 'I like it here, the staff are kind to me.' One relative told us 'If there are problems they always contact me. I am very happy with the care'.

Staff provide a healthy balance and choice of food and use the opportunity to involve people with the planning, preparation and clearing away, thereby involving them in every day activities. Dietary needs were met and staff were properly trained in food hygiene. Specialist dietary advice was followed in the management of a person's medical needs.

Clear systems were in place for the management of medicines and staff were trained to ensure medicines were handled safely, securely and appropriately.

Staff were trained to care for people who used the service and staff demonstrated a good understanding of the needs of those people. Planning of staff rostas and strategies for coping with shortfalls in staffing was in place.

The home had assurances in place to assess and monitor the quality of services.

28 February 2013

During a routine inspection

We had conversations with four people who lived in Shaftesbury Court. They talked to us about what they did with their time. One person told us they were about to be taken to 'flower arranging' which they said they liked, another person wanted to tell us about the cooking they did.

People told us they got on very well with the staff. They told us about a range of clubs, outings, holidays and routine activities they took part in over the course of a year. When we spoke with families of people who used the service they told us they were confident and satisfied with the standard of care their relatives received.

When we looked at care support documentation we found there had been a thorough assessment of care needs undertaken before people moved in. This was clearly focussed on the person concerned as an individual. This approach meant the person's physical, mental health, social and other needs were identified clearly with their involvement.

We spoke with family representatives of people who lived in Shaftesbury Court. They told us they knew how to raise any concerns or complaints formally if they needed to. They all told us they were more likely to speak informally to the manager or staff team if they had any concerns. We saw the home had a complaints policy and procedure which was provided in a suitable format to enable the people who lived in the home to understand and be able to use it.

During a routine inspection

People told us they liked living at the home; felt well supported by staff and would know who to approach should they have any concerns. One person said she had been encouraged by her key worker to be involved in reviewing her care during monthly care reviews. She also told us that she felt able to attend dental appointments alone and go out on social outings alone.

People said they had chosen which activities to participate in and that staff at the home had encouraged them with support to be independent in every day tasks. People said they liked the food at the home and that they had been involved in planning their meals for the week.
