25 July 2013

During a routine inspection

We visited the home on 25 July 2013 without letting people know we were coming. We spoke with the manager and two staff. We also spoke with two of the five people who lived at the home. After our visit, we spoke over the telephone with relatives of two people who lived at the home.

Four of the people who lived there had been together for a number of years. One person had moved there as a temporary measure last year when another home had closed. Staff recognised that their needs were different as they had less profound learning difficulties. The local authority was looking for suitable alternative accommodation. It was hoped this would be found later this year.

A relative told us, 'I couldn't have chosen a better place for X to live.' Another relative said, 'It's absolutely amazing.' Staff said, 'It's an excellent place to work.'

Staff told us that staff cover was good and they plan a wide range of activities for people. On the day of our visit, two people who lived at the home had gone to a day centre, one had gone to a sensory room and another was out shopping.

People who lived at the home interacted positively with staff and appeared very comfortable and relaxed. They were encouraged to make their own choices and decisions. The home was clean, tidy and well maintained.

During a routine inspection

We visited the home without letting people know we were coming. We spoke with the manager and two staff and met four of the five people who lived there. We also spoke by phone with relatives of two of the people who lived at the home.

Four of the people who lived there had lived together at the home for several years and were fully at ease with each other.

One person with far less profound disabilities had moved there as a temporary measure when its adjacent 'sister' home had closed. The service recognised that their needs were very different to those of the other people who lived at the home and alternative places were being looked for by the local authority. This person appeared quite settled in the home and spent much time with staff and helping with chores.

Comments from relatives were positive. They told us of 'good standards of care' and that the staff 'listen, keep us informed'. People living at the home indicated by their general behaviour and responses they were happy and settled. One person was able to tell us they got on well with staff. They enjoyed having a joke with them.

We saw staff interacting positively with people who lived at the home and encouraging them to be as independent as possible, whilst ensuring their safety. Two people used wheelchairs and were able to move freely around the ground floor of the home in them.

During a routine inspection

The two people living at the home that we saw during our visit indicated in their demeanour and, in one case, with occasional words, that they were content at the home. They were free to move around as they wished, but were dependent to a large degree on staff stimulating them and encouraging and facilitating activities. We noted warm and friendly relations between staff and service users, but with some being more open and less reserved than others, with corresponding reactions from service users. We spoke with one relative who frequently visited, who had no concerns about the care, but wondered if there could be more activities provided at times. We spoke with staff who were very positive and optimistic about the service, following some inconsistencies of leadership over the past year.
