How this check was done

Our judgement

People were living in safe and clean environment that promoted their wellbeing. Overall, we found that The Shieling was meeting this essential standard.

User experience

People commented positively on the improvements to the building. Four people showed us their bedrooms. Two had been newly carpeted and the shower area, which they used, had also been refurbished. They were very pleased with these changes.

Other evidence

Two visits were made to the service. The first one, on 26 October 2011, was carried out to make sure people were safe and check the improvements made to the premises. The second visit, on 6 December 2011, was a follow up to check on outstanding issues. On both visits we checked some bedrooms and communal areas. Some people did not want us to view their rooms and this was respected. A significant amount of work has been done to improve the environment and make it safer for people. For example, on the top floor, the shower facility had been refurbished and was in good order. The toilet, that had been out of use, had been replaced and the flooring replaced. This area was now clean and usable and there were no unpleasant odours. A bedroom area, which had been flooded, had been repaired and refurbished. Two new carpets had been fitted in bedrooms. All the rooms inspected were habitable, clean and in good order. Generally the home was clean and all walls and paintwork were in good repair.
