During a routine inspection

During our visit to Brook House we spoke with three people using the service.

Two of the three people told us that their dignity, privacy and the right to make decisions had been respected. However, three people said that they had not been consulted about the menu. They told us that they didn't like the food and that the only other choice of meal was a salad. One person felt that meal portions were not adequate. Two people said that they preferred to buy takeaway meals instead. The provider said that they had not been told that people accommodated in Brook House had complained about the food.

People told us that their support and treatment needs were being met in a safe way. They said that they got on well with the staff. One person commented, "Staff have been good to me. They speak up for my rights and try to get the best possible results for me."

The three people described their living environment as 'scruffy', 'needing a lick of paint' and 'depressing.' Following our visit the provider told us that work had been started on improving the environment in Brook House.

Mental Health Act Commissioner reports

Each year, we visit all NHS trusts and independent providers who care for people whose rights are restricted under the Mental Health Act to monitor the care they provide and check that patients' rights are met. Immediate concerns raised by patients on those visits are discussed, if appropriate, with hospital staff.

Our Mental Health Act Commissioners may carry out a number of visits to each provider over a 12-month period, during which they talk to detained patients, staff and managers about how services are provided. In the past, we summarised themes from the visits and published an annual statement followed by the provider's response where applicable. We are looking at different ways to indicate the outcomes of our monitoring in the future.
