All Inspections

13 November 2013

During a routine inspection

Support at The Brambles was provided to enable individual preferences and choices to be fulfilled. The diversity, values and human rights of the individual were respected.

Health and welfare were maintained by appointments being made with healthcare professionals as needed. We saw that records reflected appointments that were attended and an outline of any health issues was described in the care plan. One person living at The Brambles discussed their recent activities and some daily routines they enjoyed. We saw and heard how excited this person was about recent events that included a visit to see a family member.

Our discussions regarding meals that had recently been enjoyed and routines around shopping trips showed us that a nutritious and balanced diet was promoted. This supported the health and wellbeing of the person receiving support.

During a routine inspection

During discussions with one person using the service, we were told about their choices regarding such things as holidays and attending various health care appointments.

We looked at one care plan that clearly explained how the individual preferred to be supported, with clear information about choices regarding such things as how their room should be left at night.

The medication records we saw were appropriately completed and up to date. We were told there was also a record for any additional medication given such as pain relief or antibiotics.

Members of staff were fully aware of the support that was needed and have long term experience of providing support at The Brambles.

Since the last inspection, records had been reviewed and were found to be up to date and signed by the individual concerned.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with people who use the service and a person caring for them helped us communicate with them effectively.

People told us that they felt safe and protected and that they saw the manager as their mum and her daughter as their sister. They said that they would say to the manager if they were unhappy with anything, or to their father.

A person told us that they grew up here and felt like a member of the family. They were very happy with the care and support provided to them. They told us: 'It is nice here. I slept very well. I have a care plan, I cook here sometimes. They also told us, 'I went for a holiday to France, I slept there. We had a big party, 15 people came. I had a nice bath this morning'.

A person told us that they were happy for staff to keep their money and help them with their finances. A person explained that they themselves would, 'Waste my money and buy things I don't need, but they give me money when I need it. I bought a new coat.'

A person confirmed that they knew their care plan. They explained their likes and stated that these were written in their care plan and showed us their care plan to confirm that.
