This was the first time we had rated this service. We rated it as good because:

  • The service had enough staff to care for patients and keep them safe. Staff had training in key skills, understood how to protect patients from abuse, and managed safety well. Staff understood how to protect patients from abuse. Staff assessed risks to patients, acted on them and kept good care records.
  • Staff provided good care and treatment. Managers monitored the effectiveness of the service and made sure staff were competent. Staff worked well together for the benefit of patients, advised them on how to lead healthier lives, supported them to make decisions about their care, and had access to good information.
  • Staff treated patients with compassion and kindness, respected their privacy and dignity, took account of their individual needs, and helped them understand their conditions. They provided emotional support to patients, families and carers.
  • The service planned care to meet the needs of patients, took account of patients’ individual needs, and made it easy for people to give feedback. People could access the service when they needed it and did not have to wait for treatment.
  • Leaders ran the service well, using reliable information systems and supported staff to develop their skills. Staff understood the service’s values and how to apply them in their work. Staff felt respected, supported and valued. The service engaged well with patients to plan and manage services.

However:

  • The service did not always control infection risks or manage medicines safety well. Clinical waste was not stored securely. Medications used for training were not clearly marked as such or stored securely.

We spoke with people who use the service and looked at feedback questionnaires that had been completed in November and December 2012. People were satisfied with the care and treatment received and were complimentary about the staff. One person had written, "everyone has been very kind and made a difficult experience less stressful". People would recommend the clinic to others.

People were given sufficent information regarding their care and treatment and were involved in making decisions about their care. Writtten information was available and people were assessed by a doctor who spent an hour at their first consultation discussing their options. One person had written "it felt like we had a discussion and were not being lectured about infertility".

Care and treatment was planned in a way that ensured a person's safety and welfare. People were treated by staff with the appropriate skills and training and people had access to a counselling service, if required. Staff also assessed a person's ability to care for any future child. There were arrangements and equipment in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies and the provider had arranged for practice scenarios to put staff training into practice.

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection and infection control audits were undertaken by an external organisation. There was a Quality Team to monitor the quality of the service provided, including the analysis of patient feedback.

People who use the service told us that the clinic was 'brilliant'. It had a calm and relaxed atmosphere and staff were friendly. They were happy with the care they received and said that staff explained everything to them.

They found the clinic to be clean and liked the environment.
