During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke with two people who lived in the home. Both said care workers were kind and they looked after them well. One said they had their medicines given to them at the same time each day and they had no problems. Another person said they were prescribed painkillers which nurses gave to them regularly and at the right time.

We found some medicines were not available to give to people because insufficient stock was kept in the home.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke with three people who lived in the home. We found one person difficult to communicate with but they appeared settled and comfortable. Another person said care workers were very good at their job and were very kind. They said their morning medicines were given to them between 7:30am and 10:00am depending on which nurse was on duty. Another person said they were happy in the home and said care workers were very kind and they always applied their creams properly.

During a routine inspection

We asked people about their experiences and how staff involved them and kept them informed of what was going on. Everyone said they could speak openly and that their views were listened to. For example, one person said they were involved with the social arrangements in the home and another said they were consulted about their preferred routine and staff respected their decisions. All expressed a view they were treated with respect and dignity.

We asked people about their involvement with their plan of care. They told us they were consulted on a 'day to day' basis and that the staff explained any changes in care provision. They were however, unsure as to how this information is recorded. We were told staff consulted them about decisions in respect of choice of meals, or preferred daily routine and staff respected their wishes.

Discussion with people confirmed that staff consulted them about decisions about their care and welfare. We were told the staff were prompt in seeking advice from people such as GPs or specialist nurses when their advice was needed.

People told us that they were pleased with the care and support they were receiving. They said the staff were attentive and had time to explain things to them. We were also informed that they knew the staff by name, which they found reassuring.

People said they liked the meals and that they were offered plenty of choice at each meal time. They said they did not always see the menu, however the staff talked to them about the daily choices and made a record of what they would like to eat. We were told meals were served on time and that people could go to the dining room or have their meal in their own bedroom.

People said that the staff contacted their GP for them and were prompt in arranging health appointments. We were told health care professionals could visit any time and that the staff would carry out required actions to improve their health. We spoke with a health care professional who advised us that there were no concerns or ongoing issues with the service.

People said they felt 'comfortable' with the staff. They felt reassured when receiving care from them.

People informed us they had their medicines on time and they could ask for pain relief if this was required.

People told us they liked the home, they felt it was pleasantly decorated and easy to get around. They also said they could bring in personal items from their own home.

People told us there was sufficient equipment in the bathrooms to ensure they could bathe safely.

People told us they had confidence in the staff and they were aware new staff went through a recruitment process.

People told us there were sufficient numbers of staff on duty and that when assistance was needed, this was provided promptly.

People said the staff were kind and helpful in their approach. All said the staff were respectful about their preferred routines/choices and tried to accommodate these where possible.

People we spoke with said the manager and staff listened to what they had to say and they could make suggestions about different aspects of the home.

People told us they were satisfied with the service and that they had no complaints at this time. They said they felt able to speak 'openly' to the manager and staff.

People said they were aware that the staff held records about their care but they were not directly involved with them.

People we spoke with said the manager was good at her job and that the home was run efficiently.
