All Inspections

8 May 2013

During a routine inspection

This inspection focused on the management of nutrition and hydration for people who had dementia. We conducted a short period of observation whilst people were supported to eat their lunch. This was because not all people were able to tell us their views.

We considered that people who lacked ability to manage their own meals received good support and were referred to specialist advisors as necessary. People's nutritional health needs were closely monitored by the staff and visiting health professionals. Staff we spoke with were aware of information about cultural and religious requirements as well as individual food preferences.

We saw that people who had dementia were given help and assistance with their nutritional and hydration care needs. Staff demonstrated a good understanding and knowledge of the individual dietary and fluid intake needs of the people in their care. Care plans were detailed and provided staff with clear instructions on how people should be encouraged to eat and why. We found good record keeping regarding the monitoring of fluid and food intake.

The home had sufficient staff to ensure people's safety and wellbeing regarding nutritional management. Staff had attended training courses to equip them with the knowledge and skills to carry out their duties.

The provider had systems in place to assess and monitor the quality of the service provided regarding nutrition and hydration.

8 October 2012

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with told us that they received the care and support they needed. Comments included, 'We are well cared for'. 'Staff look after our every need'.

We viewed records that showed people had been involved in and consulted about their care and support. People received a care needs assessment prior to being admitted. We saw that staff supported people sensitively and politely. We spoke to people who provided examples of how staff promoted their privacy and dignity whilst delivering care.

People told us that they were safe. One person said, 'Staff do listen and communicate any information well. I know that staff will care for me as I want'. People were protected because staff were confident to recognise and report abuse.

People were supported by a knowledgeable and well trained staff team who knew their care and support needs.

People told us that the staff asked them if they were alright and if they were happy with everything. They said that they were able to express their wishes and share their views about how they were feeling. People said that if they had any concerns or worries that they would speak with a member of staff or the manager. We saw records that showed the provider had systems in place to monitor and review people's complaints and deliver improvement.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this review to check on the care and welfare of people who used this service.

We did not review every outcome for this provider. We were proportionate in our approach and focused on outcome four and 16.

We spent an hour in one of the lounges so we could carry out a short period of observation of activity in the home. The general mood of people in the lounge was calm but with a good level of activity and interaction. We observed staff interacting with people in a calm, dignified and unhurried manner. We saw that good working relationships had been developed between people who used the service and staff. We observed laughter and fun in this area during the timeframe. We reviewed the care plans for two people we specifically observed and spoke with staff about their work.

We looked at some satisfaction survey results of the provider this year. People overall expressed the opinion that the service at Westlands was good.
