During a routine inspection

At the inspection we found there were only eleven people using the service. This is because North Yorkshire County Council are changing the way they deliver services to people. In the future they are no longer going to provide residential care to people at Cherry Garth. Instead Cherry Garth is to become a supported living complex. This means people will live independently within the housing complex and be supported by a domiciliary care service. The people who we spoke to during the inspection planned to reside in the new complex once it was completed.

We saw that people looked cared for. They were clean and comfortable they told us they felt supported. One person said, 'We still get cared for, but we do more for ourselves now. It's good we are encouraged to make a cuppa when we want one and the staff are trying to make us independent." Another person said, 'I never thought that when I came to Cherry Garth I would be given the opportunity to have my own place again, I am really excited about it.'

We saw there was a choice of well-cooked and nutritious food. People's weights were monitored and staff took action promptly if they thought people were risk of dehydration or malnutrition. People told us the food was lovely. One person said, 'We get a really good choice; and everything is tasty.'

We saw that people's medication was administered properly and safely managed.

Audits were carried out to make sure people received a good service, that was responsive to people's views.

During a routine inspection

People told us that they were happy with the care they received. Comments included 'They (staff) are all helpful. They all treat us well. 'People we spoke with told us that they are able to make decisions about their lives and about their care. One person said 'Yes, the staff always ask and involve me about everything to do with my care.' People we spoke with confirmed that they received their medication at the right time.

Everyone we spoke with said that if they were upset or had a complaint they would either speak to a member of staff or the manager of the home. People also told us that they were well looked after by staff at the home and described them as being 'helpful' and 'kind'

We spoke to a relative who was visiting the home who told us 'The staff at Cherry Garth always make relatives feel welcome. They always make me a cup of tea when I visit.'

We also spoke with a visiting health care professional who told us 'The staff here at the home are very good they always put themselves out and they do a good job.'
