During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with two people who were able to tell us about their experience of living in the home. Other people were not able to express their views of living in the home because of their complex communication needs. Therefore, we spent time observing people in the downstairs lounge. We observed staff supporting people to make decisions about their daily living, asking people what they wanted to eat and drink and activities they wanted to take part in. Staff had a good understanding of people's needs and used this knowledge to enable people to make their own day-to-day decisions about their care.

People we spoke with told us they were happy living in the home and they were able to make choices about their daily living and how they wanted staff to support them. One person told us, 'I like living here and I like my room'.

The provider assessed people's capacity to make day-to-day decisions and what type of decisions may need to be made in their 'best interest'. Care plans were personalised to each individual's needs and detailed how staff should work with people to meet those needs. Activities were individualised and relevant to people's needs.

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. Care was provided in an environment that was safe, well maintained and met people's needs. The provider sought the views of people's families and visiting professionals and used these comments to improve and develop the service.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with two people who were able to tell us about their experience of living in the home. We were not able to speak with the other people living in the home because of their complex communication needs. However, we were able to observe care and the interactions between staff and people using the service.

People we spoke with told us they were happy living in the home and they were able to make choices about their daily living and how they wanted staff to support them. We observed staff interacting with people in a respectful manner and supporting them to help around the home preparing snacks and drinks for themselves, promoting their independence. We observed staff managing challenging behaviour effectively and working flexibly as a team to respond to the changing needs of the people living in the home.

A range of activities were on offer for people, including horse riding, going to the gym, shopping and meals out. Activity plans were individualised for each person, although if people felt they didn't want to take part in their regular planned activity other choices were offered.

Before this visit we received information that there had been seven medication errors between February 2012 - August 2012. We found that through audits carried out in July and August 2012 the provider had identified areas of concern and risk with the administration of medicines to people and had put measures in place to protect people using the service.
