People should be cared for in safe and accessible surroundings that support their health and welfare (outcome 10)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are in safe, accessible surroundings that promote their wellbeing.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 19 February 2014, observed how people were being cared for and talked with carers and / or family members. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

People who use the service, staff and visitors were protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises.

Reasons for our judgement

The provider has taken steps to provide care in an environment that is suitably designed and adequately maintained. On a previous inspection the provider had been advised that the premises required attention due to inadequate temperature control from unsuitable windows and trip hazards from mats on the floor. Prior to this visit these issues had been addressed and plans were in place to carry out works to rectify the windows.

On this visit we saw that the windows have now been replaced and that other works had also been carried out which had improved access around the home. There were ramps in place surrounding the building to improve access in and out of the front door and garden areas. New flooring was in place and new units in the utility area had been installed. We observed hand rails on the walls which enabled people to move around the home whilst maximising their independence and the staff told us they felt the home was adequate for the needs of the people they cared for. When we spoke with the staff they high-lighted that the step between the lounge and the conservatory was quite steep and they felt that a ramp would improve the safety of people when going onto this room.

We reviewed the health and safety records for the building and saw that all the necessary checks were completed for fire safety, gas and electrical appliances, lighting, water and equipment maintenance. Although the provider might like to note that the last gas safety check had high-lighted "insufficient pressure" to the boiler and there were no records to indicate what had been done about this.
