During a routine inspection

We carried out our visit during the afternoon and evening so that we could have the opportunity to meet people living at the home when they returned from their daytime activities. We met over half of the nineteen people living at the home, and four members of staff including the manager.

People told us that they liked living at the home. Some told us they had lived there for a long time, that the staff knew their needs and were, "Very good.'

There were arrangements for people to give consent for care and treatment they could understand. People were very independent and received varying levels of support. They confidently told us how they lived full and active lives.

People were supported to attend regular health care appointments to keep them well.

When their needs increased or changed we saw that the home worked with health and social care professionals to manage the support they required. Care plans were detailed with the majority of details about people's health and wellbeing.

We saw that improvements to medication arrangements made sure people received the medicines their doctor prescribed at the times they were required.

Staff told us they had received all of the necessary support and training they required to help them do their job well.

The management had effective systems to monitor and review the quality of their service. People were regularly reminded about the different ways they could have their say to improve living at Severn Cottage and Rose House.

Care plans were detailed and supported all aspects of people's health and wellbeing. We were told how they were currently being changed to make risk assessments more central to the plans in place.

People were protected because staff were confident to recognise and report abuse. There were systems in place to protect people's finances.

We saw that medication arrangements were in need of review. We found that some information was out of date. Records of administration had not been completed on all occasions and there were some discrepancies with one person's medication.

Staff told us that there were sufficient staff on duty to meet people's needs. We saw that staff had the time to respond to individual requests for support while all working together to help prepare food and go shopping.

We saw how the service monitored and reviewed the care provided. Risks to people's health and welfare were assessed and reduced as far as possible. People who received a service were consulted and involved in the delivery of the service.
