All Inspections

20 June and 5 July 2013

During a routine inspection

We asked staff how they ensured they obtained consent from people. Staff were able to give examples of how they obtained verbal consent. Comments included 'I talk to people, ask if they're OK about what we are going to do', 'I always communicate and ask permission first' and 'I talk to people and explain what I am doing.'

We looked at some comments people had made about the service. These included 'I'm very happy with all staff and they listen to me', 'Staff support me to do what I like and if I don't want to do something I tell them' and 'CIC has been a valuable resource, I know when we leave (relative's name) I do not have to worry about them at all.'

We checked a sample of six people's medication records and found they were complete, up to date and had been signed by staff when medicines had been administered. This demonstrated that people had been given their medicines when they needed them and as prescribed by their doctor.

We spoke with four members of care staff. They said they felt able to approach management if they had any concerns or training needs and were listened to. One person said 'I meet with my manager regularly but she is approachable anytime if I have a problem."

The provider used a range of tools to monitor and assess people's wellbeing. We saw there had recently been a 'You Say, We Do' event. This offered people who used the service a chance to discuss any issues or concerns they had. One person told us 'I enjoyed the day, it was very good.'

During a routine inspection

We visited six people and interviewed two relatives as part of our inspection. One person said 'they help me to do the things I like such as watching football and going to the cinema.' Another said 'the service is brilliant, they listen to what we say.'

People told us that they always had the same staff coming to their home and had a rota to show who was due to come each day. One person said 'they are brilliant ladies, (my relative) loves them.' Others said 'overall, it works well' and '(my relative) is well looked after, we've got no complaints.'

One person said "I feel safe living here", another said 'I have peace of mind when I leave (relative's name).'

People told us they felt able to raise any concerns with staff or managers and were listened to. They said that action was taken to change things as a result of their comments.
