During a routine inspection

When we visited The Meadows Care Home we found that 63 people used the service. Due to their health conditions or complex needs not all people were able to share their views about the care that they received. We observed their experiences to support our inspection.

We met and spoke with eleven people who used the service and four relatives. We spoke with the registered manager, the clinical lead, the nurse quality manager, two trained nurses and six care staff. We looked at eight care records and six staff files.

We found that the provider had systems in place to gain the consent to care and treatment of people who used the service. We found that staff had an understanding of the needs of people who used the service. We found that care and treatment was planned and delivered in a safe way, which met people's individual care needs. People we spoke with were positive about the care they received. One person told us, "The care is very good, nothing is too much trouble." One relative told us, "They have provided everything for X, it's marvellous."

We found that the provider worked well with other services to ensure the health and wellbeing of the people who used the service. We found the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines.

We found that there was an effective recruitment process in place to ensure that staff had the skills to meet people's needs.

During a routine inspection

There were 54 people using the service at the time of this inspection. We spoke with four people using the service, and with five relatives of people using the service. Some people in the home had limited communication abilities and so we could not interview them to find out their views. However, we able to observe their mood, behaviour and how they interacted with staff.

People were involved in making choices about their care and treatment. People and their relatives told us they were involved in discussions about their care. People told us their privacy and dignity were respected. We observed positive interactions between people in the home and staff.

We found that people's needs were assessed and that care was being planned and provided in a way which met their needs.

All of the people we spoke with told us they, or their relative, was safe in the home. One person said, 'I've no worries'.

People told us there were usually enough staff available to meet their needs. They told us the staff were, 'very good', and, 'They understand what I need'.

People's views, comments and complaints were listened to and acted on as part of the provider's system for monitoring the quality of the service provided. People and their relatives told us that the staff and manager were approachable and would listen to their comments and views.
