During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people who lived at the home and three visitors. People told us that they were happy with the care provided by staff at the home. Comments included: "They are all fantastic." "I have everything I need here they are very good to us." "I am happy that X is being well cared for."

We walked around the home and saw that all areas were clean and tidy. We saw that sanitising hand gels were placed around the building for people to use. Staff told us they had completed infection control training. Visitors we spoke with told us the home was always clean. Comments included: "What I liked about here was there is no smell it is always fresh and clean." "X's room is nice and clean."

We looked at a sample of staff recruitment files and saw that appropriate safety checks had been carried out before staff started work. This was to make sure applicants were safe to work with vulnerable people. We spoke with staff who confirmed that they had an interview with the manager and had to provide references and an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure before they started work.

We saw that regular audits of management systems were carried out on a weekly or monthly basis. We saw that fire equipment and alarms were checked and tested at regular intervals. Moving and handling equipment was well maintained and we saw that there were service contracts in place.

During a themed inspection looking at Dignity and Nutrition

People told us what it was like to live at this home and described how they were treated by staff and their involvement in making choices about their care. They also told us about the quality and choice of food and drink available. This was because this inspection was part of a themed inspection programme to assess whether older people living in care homes are treated with dignity and respect and whether their nutritional needs are met.

The inspection team was led by a CQC (Care Quality Commission) inspector joined by an

Expert by Experience ' a person who has experience of using this type of service and who can provide that perspective.

We also used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us.

We asked people if their dignity and privacy was respected. Comments included: "They are really good, they do everything possible when they can't they will tell you so and even explain why not." "I have no problems whatsoever, I have privacy when I want it, with arrangement I can go to shops locally."
