During a routine inspection

We spoke with a range of people about the home. They included, the registered provider, some of the staff members on duty, people who lived at the home and a visiting relative. We also had responses from external agencies including social services. This was to gain a balanced overview of what people experienced living Thornlea residential home.

People were seen to be cared for in ways that suited them. Some of those we spoke with told us that they had been involved in the planning of their own care. We saw that people were given opportunities to inform staff of their personal support requirements.

We spoke individually with four people living at Thornlea. They told us they were happy living at the home and that they liked the staff team. A more in-depth discussion took place with a visiting relative, who told us they were 'very satisfied' with the care and support provided by the staff. 'I come most days and feel very confident with the way my relative is cared for. My relative likes living here and likes all the staff'. A resident we spoke with told us, 'It's like a home from home. I like living here'.

The provider was taking a person to a doctor's appointment shortly after we arrived. When they came back they told us the provider always takes people for appointments. They told us, '.m, is very good, he doesn't let you go on your own'.

During a routine inspection

We visited this home unannounced on Tuesday 26th June 2012. The homes provider and manager were not on duty on the day of inspection. However, during the course of the site inspection we spoke with the three staff members on duty. Also, a number of people living at the home and a visitor. In addition we spoke with the provider by telephone. We spent time in various parts of the home, in order to gain a general overview of the service. This included communal areas as well as talking to people at their invitation in their own room.

In addition to gaining the views of people who use the service, we asked other organisations if they had any comments to make. None of the organisations we communicated with had any issues with the service.

People we spoke with throughout the inspection process were satisfied living at Thornlea. They told us it had a homely and comfortable environment. One person living at the home told us, 'I've been here for some time. It has a nice feel about it.' Another person told us, 'There is always someone around to help you, being a bungalow makes it handy to get around as well.'

People living in Thornlea and visiting family members told us the home provided a good standard of care.

People said they made decisions about their lives in the home and they knew who to speak to if they had any concerns about the services provided.

People told us:

"Staff are respectful, yet friendly"

"Staff say encouraging things to me"

And said,

"I'm safer here than living alone and struggling".
