All Inspections

9 October 2013

During a routine inspection

At the time of the inspection six people were living at Riverview. We talked with three people. One person told us 'I like it here, I like going to the pub'. We spoke with relatives of two people. One said their relative was very happy, adding 'the manager and staff have always done well by us'. The other said 'Riverview is the best place I know in the area. The staff are very friendly and are all well trained.'

We spoke with the manager and four support staff, including two seniors. One member of staff said 'The management are brilliant and have never let me down.' Another said 'We all support each other, it is a good team.' A third told us 'This is the most person centred place I've ever worked in. We all make sure it is the best it can be.' We also spoke with Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) assessor employed by an external organisation, who said 'I feel the happiness when I come in'.

We reviewed care records for three people who used the service. Care and support were planned and delivered so as to ensure the welfare of people using the service and to meet their individual needs.

People were supported to eat healthily and were involved in growing vegetables and preparing food.

We found that people were protected from the risk associated with unsafe management of medication because there were effective systems in place.

People using the service benefitted from a staff team who were well trained and supported to do their job.

During a routine inspection

During this unannounced inspection we used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service. People using the service had complex needs which meant they were not always able to tell us their experiences. Therefore, in addition to speaking with four individuals we gathered evidence by observing care; reviewing records and speaking to the manager and two care workers.

People's diversity, values and human rights were respected. We noted throughout the inspection that care workers were polite, respectful, patient and sensitive.

We found that people's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan. A care worker told us 'it's nice and friendly'. An individual we spoke with said 'it feels like home'.

People we spoke with told us they felt safe living at Riverview. We found people who use the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening.

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.

People who use the service, their representatives and staff were asked for their views about their care and treatment and they were acted on.

The provider had an effective system in place to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of people who use the service and others.
