During a routine inspection

At the time of our inspection Care Homes Stoke were providing personal care services to a total of 146 people. They were in the process of registering new office premises. In order to reach our judgements we spoke with four members of staff including the registered manager and we spoke with five people who used the service or their families.

People who used the service said they were treated with respect and their dignity was maintained. A relative told us, "I'm not in the room while they see to my relative. Everything is done very discreetly and respectfully".

Care records reflected people's needs and enabled staff to identify how best to provide care to the individual. A person who used the service said, "They look after me really well. They know what I need".

The provider had systems in place which enabled them to liaise closely with other services in the wider health community.

Policies and practices ensured that people who used the service and staff who provided services were protected from the risk of infection.

There were sufficient suitable qualified and skilled staff to provide the service.

The provider had systems in place to help monitor the quality of service. Systems were designed to enable the provider to identify areas for improvement and respond accordingly.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with four people using the service or their significant other, four staff, and the registered manager. Our inspection was discussed and arranged one day in advance. This was to ensure that we had time to speak with staff working at the service, as well as people using the service.

People told us their privacy and dignity was respected. Comments included, 'They leave me to my own when needed and offer me a towel, and they always close the curtains. They wear their gloves and are never late.' Another person said, 'They are like angels, each and every one.'

People confirmed they knew when their carers were changed or going to be late. Some people told us they received a weekly rota so they knew who would be coming. This meant people were kept well informed.

People told us they received the care and support that met their individual needs. We found the provider was delivering a service which had respected people's views. Assessments and reviews conducted by the provider demonstrated they had consulted with people.

People told us they felt safe and reassured in the presence of staff. They said staff respected their property and belongings.

We looked at the recruitment procedures for staff and found that the necessary systems were in place.

We saw complaints were responded to and the provider acted upon any concerns to improve the service.
