There should be enough members of staff to keep people safe and meet their health and welfare needs (outcome 13)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by sufficient numbers of appropriate staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 27 November 2013, talked with people who use the service and talked with carers and / or family members. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people’s needs.

Reasons for our judgement

We spoke with 20 people who used the service and their representatives and asked them about the service they received. People told us that care workers were reliable and competent at their work. People we spoke with said they received their care at the time it was required. On the occasion that a care worker was late, people said they had been informed. Nobody we spoke with reported any calls that had been missed.

Care workers told us that they were currently given the right amount of time in order for them to complete the tasks required at each call and people who use the service told us that the support workers always completed all task required, before they left.

We looked at the training records held at the service. This was to check that the necessary training had been provided to enable the care workers to properly support those in their care. Care workers told us that they had received the training they needed to enable them to look after people well and the training records showed us that the required training had been provided. This included training in the safeguarding of vulnerable adults, moving and handling, infection control, dementia care and food hygiene.
