People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

Our judgement

The arrangements in place for the safe and effective recruitment of careworkers ensures that only staff suitable to be employed are offered a post with the agency. On the basis of the evidence provided and the views of people using the service we found the service to be compliant with this outcome

User experience

People we spoke to said that they were confident that the provider would employ people who are appropriately qualified and are physically able to do the job. They were also confident that the provider will undertake any necessary checks of staff beforehand.

Other evidence

The provider told us that there is a recruitment policy and procedure in place. All office staff who are involved in the recruitment process are trained on this policy that involves the process of an application form, health details, two written references, qualifications and training undertaken to date and a criminal record check. There is also a completed medical questionnaire for each employee undertaken. The ability of people to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing is checked at interview and again during the induction process. If there are any doubts about someone's ability to communicate effectively, they are not taken on. We reviewed three application form and it appeared that all these followed the policy and procedure set by the provider. We also spoke to two staff and both had an up to date job description.
