All Inspections

1 November 2012

During a routine inspection

There were eight people living at the home on the day of our inspection. We spent time with those people to find out about the service provided.

People had complex needs and were not all able to tell us about their experiences. We used different methods to help us understand their experiences which included observation. We observed good interactions between staff and people living there, people smiled and they looked happy.

People who could speak with us told us positive things about the home. One person said "It is really good here I am happy". Another person said "It is good". A relative said "The home is excellent I can not praise it enough".

People's needs had been assessed by a range of health professionals including doctors and the optician. This meant that people's health care needs had been monitored and met. People were supported by staff to engage in the activities that they enjoyed.

Risks with eating and drinking had been identified and managed to prevent choking and malnutrition. People were given choices about the food and drinks provided.

We saw that medication systems were safe and people had been given their medication as it had been prescribed by their doctor.

Recruitment processes ensured that staff employed were suitable to work with the people living at the home which protected them from harm.

Records and staff both confirmed that systems had been used to monitor how the home had been run.

16 February 2012

During a routine inspection

We carried out this review to check on the care and welfare of people using this service. We reviewed all the information we hold about this provider, carried out a visit on 9 February 2012, observed how people were being cared for, looked at records of people who use services, and talked to staff.

People living at 34 Pedmore Walk were unable to tell us about their experiences due to their medical conditions. We saw that information is available to show how people are supported to express their views about things that affect them and make their decisions known.

Where people are not able to make decisions other people act on their behalf so that any decisions made are in the person's best interests. This ensures that staff knows how to support people and ensure their well being. We saw that staff works well with other professionals to help ensure that people's complex needs are being met. We saw that people appeared comfortable and happy in the presence of staff, smiling and vocalising. We saw that staff are in constant attendance in the lounge areas and are aware of the risk factors for people and how to respond to these.

We saw that people take part in a range of activities that they like to do, and some people attend day centres during the week.

We saw that each person had a care plan in place to show how the service supports them with their care and complex health needs. Plans identify risks associated with people's health and describe how these are being managed. This means that people experience effective, safe and appropriate care and support that meets their needs.

Regular checks and audits of the home are done to make sure that people are getting the care and support they want and need. We observed that the building and facilities are creating some difficulties for people due their changing needs and the need for larger wheelchairs.
