During an inspection looking at part of the service

This visit was undertaken to check the service's compliance with the regulations and two warning notices which we had served on the home following our previous inspection. The visit was announced, the provider and staff had four hours notice that we would be visiting.

The provider had told us that they planned to close the home. We were told that people who lived at Little Ashmill had been told that the home would close and they were being helped to find somewhere else to live. Two people we spoke with told us that they had somewhere new to live and they were looking forward to moving there as they would be with their friends.

We found that staff were welcoming and there were positive interactions between staff and people who lived in the home.

We found that care records had been improved and more fully identified people's needs and how they should be met.

Required improvements had been made to protect people from abuse and respond appropriately to any allegation of abuse.

We found that the service was compliant with regulations and had met the requirements of the warning notices.

During a routine inspection

People told us that they were usually asked about their preferences and they were usually met. However one person told us that they were bored and did not have enough to do.

People who lived in the home had mixed views whether they were treated with respect. One person said, "Staff always treat me with respect" and another said, " Most staff are good but some are not very nice to me". We observed occasions when staff did not treat people with the respect.

People living in the home had a plan of care that identified their needs. They had usually been involved in its development. People had not been involved in the ongoing review of their support plan, one person told us, "I am not allowed to look at it".

The home had appropriate arrangements in place for the management of people's medicines.

Staff did not have the knowledge and skills nor were they adequately supported, to ensure that people received the support they needed.

There was not an effective system in place to assess, monitor and identify the quality of service provided. There was no system to manage risks relating to the health, welfare and safety of people living at Little Ashmill Residential home when these were necessary.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to four people who live at the home, they told us that they were happy living at Little Ashmill.

We found that the home is a a comfortable and pleasant place to live. People all have their own bedroom, which they do not share. People are able to personalise their bedrooms as they choose.

People told us how they spend their day. They said that they got up and go to bed when they choose and are able to have their meals in either the main lounge/ dining room or their bedrooms if they preferred or were unwell. They told us that they go out at least once a week to participate in activities and outings with another home which they enjoyed. They said:

"At Big Ashmill we do sewing and drawing, I like it at Big Ashmill there are more people there". They told us about attending college and courses they were going to do after the summer break.

People told us that staff are kind and that they are "lovely". They told us that staff assisted them when they needed it.

There is a small paved back garden with garden furniture available. People told us they enjoyed spending time in the garden but would prefer it with pots of flowers which it had previously.
