During a routine inspection

During our visit to the home we spoke with four people who live there. They told us they are happy living at the home, are looked after well, treated with dignity and respect and helped when needed. One person said; 'People are looked after properly and look well dressed and cared for'. Another said, 'Everyone here is friendly and I am happy with the way I am looked after'.

All were clear they could choose to do what they wanted. One person told us; "If I want to get up I get up, if I don't I can stay in bed'. Another person said, 'I don't want to join in the activities and that is respected'. They all said there are enough staff to meet their care and welfare needs. One person said, 'When I ring or ask for help I get it'.

People gave examples of the things they did during the day including socialising with other people living at the home, having visitors, having their hair done, watching television, reading, and taking part in activities organised by the activity coordinator. All said they enjoyed the food provided by the home. One person said, 'The food is fresh, there is plenty of it and it is not institutional at all'.

The one area of concern raised was the lift. People told us this breaks down frequently and was out of order for two weeks earlier in 2012. Two people who live upstairs told us this meant they had to stay in their rooms as they could not get downstairs. One person living downstairs said she could not have her hair done as she had to go upstairs for this. The manager told us action was in progress to address the problems with the lift.
