Staff should be properly trained and supervised, and have the chance to develop and improve their skills (outcome 14)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 23 September 2013 and 24 September 2013, talked with people who use the service and talked with carers and / or family members. We talked with staff and talked with commissioners of services.

Our judgement

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

Reasons for our judgement

Staff we spoke with said they received mandatory training and specialist training, if required, which supported them to meet the needs of the people they cared for. People we spoke with said the staff had received training and one person said: "They definitely know what they are doing. They're on the ball".

Staff said they received regular supervision, spot checks when they were working in people's homes and an annual appraisal of their performance. All of these were written and kept on file.
