During an inspection looking at part of the service

This report is supplemental to the report of our inspection of the 19th March 2013, when we noted concerns over the procedures relating to the administration of medications. We set a compliance action which required the provider to takes steps to comply with the requirements of Regulation 13 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010.

This visit was to monitor whether appropriate action had been taken by the provider to comply with the regulation. We saw evidence to confirm that the provider was meeting the regulatory requirements.

19 March 2013

During a routine inspection

On the day of the inspection the home was very busy and we saw activities taking place and health professionals visiting the home throughout the day. All the staff were polite and friendly to people in the home, their relatives and other visitors. There was always a member of staff close by to meet the needs of people.

We spoke to three relatives at the home and they all spoke positively about the care their relatives received. One person said 'This is my first visit and it's a good first impression.' Another person said 'when I heard [my relative] was coming here, I was happy as I know she will be looked after. All the staff are great and so are the managers.'

The care plans were person-centred and monitored and recorded important aspects of people's health. For example, blood glucose was monitored for those with diabetes and fluid input and output charts were in place for those who needed it.

The home worked well with other professionals and shared accurate information to ensure the safety of the people in their care.

We were, however, concerned about the administration of medication as we found that some medication was recorded as having been given when this was not the case. An external pharmacist audited medicines once a month, but there was a lack of internal auditing which would have identified recording errors.
