During a routine inspection

People told us they felt respected and they understood the care, treatment and support choices that were available to them. One person told us “I’m only here for a short time on respite and know what support I need and am getting”.

We observed positive interactions between people who used the service and staff. One person told us about the improvements to her health since she had lived at the home and said "When I first came here it was after a fall at home and I struggled to get around. I've been here around a year and am feeling much better". People who lived at The Willows had access to a number of different activities that benefitted their welfare.

People told us they felt safe living at The Willows. Staff showed a good knowledge of types of abuse, possible signs of abuse as well as how to report suspected abuse.

There were enough staff working at the home to meet the needs of the people who used the service. Staff were also appropriately trained and supported by the provider.

Records within the home were accurate, fit for purpose, kept securely and confidential.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with eleven people who use the service and two relatives.

People able to express their views told us they were happy with the care and support they received, and felt that their needs were been met. One person told us ‘’ the staff are marvellous; I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.’’ Another person told us ‘’the home provides regular entertainment and is a relaxed and friendly place to live.’’

People were supported to have appropriate food and fluids to meet their needs. Most people told us they enjoyed their meals, which included a good variety and choice of foods.

People consented to the care and treatment they received, where able. People said that they received their medicines at the times they needed them. Systems were in place to ensure that people received their medicines correctly.

People said they liked the staff that supported them and that they received the help they needed, as there was usually enough staff on duty. Most staff felt that more staff were needed at times to meet people's needs. We found that whilst people’s needs were being met, there were times when less staff were available to provide care and support to people.

Aspects of people’s care plans were not accurate and up-to-date to ensure they received safe and appropriate care.

Relatives we spoke with said they were happy with the care and support their family member received, and felt involved in decisions about their care and treatment.

17 October 2011

During a routine inspection

We spoke to ten people who used the service, two relatives and seven members of staff.

Some people were unable to share their experiences with us. Those that could spoke highly of the care and support they received, and felt that their care needs were being met. They felt listened to and had a say in how the home is run, and felt able to raise concerns if they were unhappy. One person told us ''the staff are excellent; they go out of their way to help you'. Another person said 'The Willows is a friendly and homely place to live, where staff look after us well''.

Most people felt able to express their views and involved in decisions about their care and treatment. People considered that staff treated them with dignity and respected their privacy.

People told us the home has a good team of staff and they received consistent care, as the shifts were covered by regular staff who knew their needs. Although several people said there was not enough staff available at times, which meant they had to wait longer for assistance.
