During a routine inspection

People experienced support that met their personal, social and health care needs and ensured their safety and welfare. People were involved in developing their care plans which were tailored to their individual needs and preferences. One person told us 'I know about my care plan and it says what I like to do'.

The welfare of people who used the service was promoted by a variety of opportunities for social and recreational activities. People told us 'I like doing things and I watched a DVD about butterflies' and 'I enjoy gardening'. People were supported to be as independent as possible in their daily tasks and by learning new skills and work opportunities.

People were protected from the risk of abuse. There was a system in place that supported people with their financial affairs. One person told us 'My money is safe'.

People benefitted from safe and comfortable accommodation, which was suitably designed and maintained to meet their needs. People's health and safety was protected from risks associated with the environment in which they lived.

People who used the service were supported by enough staff who knew how to meet their needs. One person told us 'Staff are nice and helpful'.

People were asked for their views about the service provided. We saw that people were able to communicate their views to staff, who listened and took action. One person told us 'I can ask staff about something if I want to.'

During a routine inspection

People described how they made decisions and choices in their daily life. One person told us 'I'm involved with my care plan- - it's planned out with a mixture of work and leisure.'

Four people attended college to learn skills in independence and in how to access the community. One person told us 'I work. I get myself up and get there. I get two buses. I try to be as independent as possible and do as much for myself as I can.' The welfare of people was promoted by a variety of social and leisure activities and learning new skills.

Records showed that people's health care needs were assessed, monitored and met. People had access to health and social care professionals. People who used the service were assessed for any risks associated with the support they received.

Staff received training and support, which helped them to meet people's needs. The staff we spoke with explained what they would do if they suspected abuse and how they would protect people. One person who used the service told us 'I'm more relaxed now and feel safe.'

People who used the service, their representatives and staff were asked for their views about their care and treatment and these were acted on. A visitor told us 'They do lots of things with people and give them a chance to express themselves.'

During a routine inspection

People told us they were happy and liked living at The Grange. One person told us 'I love it here all the staff are wonderful, the owner is like a mum to me, she took me to hospital. They are like family to me, always been my friends'. Another person said 'It is lovely here I get on with all my friends in The Grange and staff as well'.

People were able to make decisions and had control over their day to day lives. One person told us 'I've lived here for 19 years, I am part of the furniture me. I get to do lots of activities bowling, gardening, trips out on the bus but I like cooking with chef and that is what I want to do today'.

People had access to health care such as opticians, chiropodists, doctors and dentists. One person told us 'I had to have an operation and my key worker helped me make a community nursing workbook. I put my questions into it and each week the community nurse would come and fill it out and answer the questions for me'.

People were involved in all the day to day decisions within the home. Care plans reflected people's needs and wishes and were periodically updated. People told us they liked the food and what to eat was decided each day.

People were happy with their rooms. The home was homely and appropriately maintained. There were good communal facilities which people enjoyed using.

We observed good interaction between people who use the service and staff who were on duty on the day of the site visit. Staff were observed supporting people in a calm manner and using preferred names to address them.
