During a routine inspection

Some people living at the home had complex needs and were not able to verbally communicate their views and experiences to us. Due to this we have used a formal way to observe people in this review to help us understand how their needs were supported. We call this the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI).

Throughout this observation we saw all staff treated people with respect and courtesy. The atmosphere at The Haven was relaxed and during our observation we saw positive and friendly interaction between staff and people who use the service. We observed that staff occupied people in meaningful activities.

We were able to speak to some people during our visit who told us they were happy living at the home and supported to make decisions about the care they received.

However comments we received from relatives, visitors and staff about staffing levels were mixed. Some people told us the needs of their family members were being met but that staffing levels appeared low at times. Some people told us the staff did an excellent job and were caring and knowledgeable.Staff told us they pulled together and worked as a team so that at any time people's needs could be met.Whilst others did not wish to comment.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We visited the service on the 19 September 2011, where we identified concerns that staff were not support correctly at the weekends. We asked the provider to supply an action plan to evidence how they were compliant with this outcome.

We did not get peoples' views directly from them about this outcome. However their experiences were captured through records, other information we received from the provider.
