16 September 2011

During an inspection looking at part of the service

People living at Poppy Lodge had a wide range of needs. Some people had varying levels of dementia and different communication needs. We were therefore unable to fully understand everybody's specific issues.

We met with people who were confused as to time, person and place. They were relaxed and smiling and happy to converse with us about where they felt they were and who they were with.

Those people with whom we spoke all told us that the staff were nice and the meals were good. Everybody said that they they liked their rooms.

Some people with diverse needs in relation to mobilty and those with either no or poor vision said that they experienced some difficulties living in the home. We were told that access for people using wheelchairs was challenging particularly for those people who did not have a room on the ground floor. People with poor or no vision told us that the communal area did not provide an enabling environment and was not condusive to their specific needs.

A visiting family member told us how pleased they were with the way things had improved at Poppy Lodge in the last two months. They told us that there were many more staff, the standard of care had improved and nobody waits for their needs to be met.

7 June 2011

During an inspection in response to concerns

Most of the people who use the service have difficulty understanding and responding to verbal communication around specific subject areas. Some people were able to speak in general terms about their experiences.

One person told us that the staff are all very nice and the food is lovely.

Another person, who appeared low in mood told us "You just have to make the best of it" and "I won't be here much longer - I'm getting on."
