There should be enough members of staff to keep people safe and meet their health and welfare needs (outcome 13)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by sufficient numbers of appropriate staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 27 March 2013, observed how people were being cared for and talked with people who use the service. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people’s needs.

Reasons for our judgement

We found that there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. On the day of the inspection there were one care staff plus the manager on duty all of whom were full time regular staff. At night a member of staff slept on the premises. We looked at the services rota and this showed that sufficient staff were on duty at all times and that there were procedures in place to cover sickness or absence. The manager told us that existing staff or the provider cover any shortages.

We observed staff taking time supporting people and people we spoke to told us "the staff here are excellent and always around to help." Staff we spoke with confirmed that they felt there were sufficient staff on duty and confirmed that existing staff were used to cover any shortages caused by sickness or annual leave.

We looked at the staff records in order to assess the range of experience and skills across the team. The records showed that all of the staff had completed an induction programme before working unsupervised. Staff had also undertaken training specific to their role such as Epilepsy awareness and first aid. This meant that people who used the service were supported by a qualified and experienced team of staff.
