During a routine inspection

On the day of our visit there was one person living in the home. The provider told us they were not planning on accepting any new referrals for the foreseeable future and intended to continue to provide care for one person.

We spent time with the person who lived at the home, observed their care and assessed the running of the home. We spoke with three of the four people who provide care at the home; namely the manager/provider and two care workers. We saw that there was good rapport between the provider and care workers and with the person living at the home. It was evident that the service was run as their 'home' with a family feel. The owner and staff had spent some years with the person living at the home delivering care and we saw that the person's needs were well met in a personalised way.

The building had a high standard of d'cor and was kept clean and well maintained. The person living at the home was very happy with their care and said that 'they couldn't ask for better'. There was an accessible outdoor patio amongst a well stocked shrub and flower border, which the person was looking forward to enjoying in fine weather.

During a routine inspection

We visited Elm Cottage on 7 June 2012. On the day of our visit there were two people living at the home with one vacancy. The provider told us they were not planning on filling this vacancy presently.

We spent time with both people who lived at the home, observed their care and assessed the running of the home. We spoke to three of the four people who provide care at the home; namely the manager/provider and two care workers.

We saw that there was good rapport between the provider and care workers and with the two people living at the home. Both people said that 'it feels like our own home' and it was evident that the service was run as their 'home' with a family feel. The owner and staff had spent some years with those living at the home delivering care and we saw that people's needs were well met in a very personalised way.

Although the home was small, the provider ensured that quality of service was monitored by formally asking people living there and their relatives/advocates and any relevant health professionals for their opinion on care delivery. We saw the most recent survey results and these were all very positive.

The building had a high standard of d'cor and was kept clean and well maintained. Both people living at the home were very happy with their care and one person said that their room was 'just how they liked it'. There was an attractive outdoor patio amongst a well stocked shrub and flower border, which had recently been used and enjoyed during the sunny weather.
