During a routine inspection

We found that the provider is transparent in the information that they provide about any fees, contracts and terms and conditions, where people are paying either in part or in full for the cost of their care, treatment and support.

We found people's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan. A range of assessments of risks presented by the person's needs and conditions had been undertaken. There were written plans of care for staff to follow to meet each person's needs including night care plans. Care plans were regularly reviewed and updated when people's needs changed. People told us that they felt safe and they were happy to be living in the home. One person said 'Oh yes, I like it here. I am very happy, I have no concerns.'

There were sufficient numbers of staff on duty to meet people's needs. Nursing and care staff were supported by an activities coordinator and ancillary staff. Staff were familiar with the needs of the people that they cared for. People that we spoke with talked very highly of the staff. One family member said, 'The staff are loving and caring. The place is always clean and there is no smell. If they need a doctor they are always there. Okay, it's not plush but I can't fault it'.

The service has a written statement of purpose and the provider has sent us a copy. We found that the services provided at the home reflected those described in the statement of purpose.

When we visited the service we specifically focused on the care of three people with complex needs. We found that people were encouraged to express their views as far as they were able and were involved in making decisions about their care and treatment. Relatives were made welcome at the home and encouraged to be involved in the service.

People had a written assessment of their needs and a range of care plans that were individual to them. Plans were regularly reviewed and updated as people's needs changed. Risks presented by people's complex needs and conditions were assessed and managed in ways that protected their safety and their independence. People also had access to health care professionals from outside of the home and had support to visit specialist services. People and their relatives spoke very positively about the home and the staff.

We found that there were effective recruitment and selection processes in place to make sure that staff were fit to do their job. Staff spoke to people with warmth and affection, knew their needs and treated them with respect.

The home was warm, clean and kept in good repair and decoration. Records including care records, staff records and records necessary to the safe upkeep of the premises were kept up to date and fit for purpose. Personal records were securely stored.

Everyone we spoke with said they liked living at Uplands Nursing Home and had no complaints about any aspect of the service they received. We were told that the food was of a good quality with plenty of choices. People felt they were involved in planning their care and expressed satisfaction with the support they received. People said the staff were always kind and patient. There were regular meetings where people could influence the support they received and raise any concerns if they wished. We were told that the home was clean and tidy and people who lived there expressed satisfaction with the environment.

Relatives also expressed satisfaction with the support their family members received. Relatives shared their views with us, 'Really happy with the whole set-up, mom is well cared for there'.

We spoke with the doctor who was visiting the home. The doctor said that there were no concerns and commented, 'Lovely home, families ask for their relative to remain in the home as opposed to going into hospital'

Staff demonstrated good understanding of the needs of people living in the home including consent, dementia and nutrition together with the personal preferences of people so that these could be incorporated into individuals' daily lives.
