People should be given the medicines they need when they need them, and in a safe way (outcome 9)

We checked that people who use this service

  • Will have their medicines at the times they need them, and in a safe way.
  • Wherever possible will have information about the medicine being prescribed made available to them or others acting on their behalf.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 20 March 2014, talked with people who use the service and talked with staff. We reviewed information sent to us by commissioners of services.

Our judgement

People were protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider was ensuring that appropriate arrangements were in place to manage medicines.

Reasons for our judgement

We looked at the medicine administration records for six people living in the home including the storage and management of medicines. At this inspection we found appropriate arrangements were being undertaken to manage the risks associated with the unsafe use and management of medicines.

Medicines were securely locked in a medicine store room with medicine keys held by the person in charge. We found medicine storage was neat and tidy, which made it easy to find people’s prescribed medicines. Daily temperature records were available for the medicine store room which were within the recommended storage range for medicines. This meant that arrangements were in place for the safe and secure storage of people’s medicines.

Arrangements were in place to obtain, administer and record people’s medicines. Medicines were ordered and obtained from a local pharmacy. We checked six people’s medicine administration records, which had been signed for administration or a reason was documented to explain why a medicine had not been given.

Systems were also in place to ensure that checks could be made on medicine management. We were also told that regular medicine checks were being carried out. We found that these arrangements ensured that the service was making sure that people were being given their medicines as prescribed.

People who looked after their own medicines were safe from harm. We saw dated risk assessments which ensured that the necessary checks were undertaken for people to look after their own medicines.

The provider may wish to note that supporting information on how people preferred to be given their medicines was not available with their medicine administration. This meant that staff might not have all the required information available in order to give people their prescribed medicines. A medicine procedure was available which detailed how medicines should be managed, the manager told us it had recently been updated and the date would be included.
