All Inspections

6 September 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke to 6 people who live at the care home, the manager and 3 care workers. We observed a staff handover meeting and spoke by telephone to the relative of an individual who receives a residential care service.

People we spoke to told us they were generally positive about living at Watcombe Circus. One person told us 'I like it here' another told us that 'people get on your nerves sometimes but otherwise its fine'. One individual told us that their experience of living at the home has improved since the new manager came some 2 years ago. The relative we spoke to told us that they 'couldn't speak highly enough of the staff'.

Staff we spoke to told us that they enjoyed working at Watcombe Circus. They said they felt respected by managers and colleagues and benefited from good supervision and training. A bank staff member told us that when working at the care home they were never made to feel 'I'm not part of the staff team'

People who receive a service told us that they know how to complain and who to speak to if they have problems. One person told us they would speak to the manager, their key worker who they named or their community nurse who is based with the district community learning disabilities service.

During our visit we observed respectful behaviour from staff towards people who use the service and listened to creative and focused reporting and work planning between staff during the afternoon shift handover.

During a routine inspection

Not all of the people who live at Watcombe Circus could help us to understand their views on the care and support they received so we spent time sitting with them in a communal area and observing how they interacted with each other and with the staff on duty to help us understand their experience.

We also spoke with two people who lived at the service to ask for their views on the care they received. They told us they made their own decisions about the care and support they received and about their own lives. They told us the staff sometimes talked to them about decisions but did not try to change their mind.

People we spoke with told us they were happy with the care and support they received. They said that they were supported by staff with their healthcare needs, and one person told us, "the staff talk to me if I am upset." We observed people doing a variety of activities during the day.

The people we spoke with told us they felt safe living at the service and they said they liked the staff. One person said, "the staff are nice, I like it here, I feel safe. They look after me."

People we spoke with told us they got on well with the staff and found them approachable and supportive. We observed the staff interacting with people living at the service and found that they were warm and supportive. We observed the atmosphere was relaxed and that staff were encouraged and enabled to be involved and to express their views.

The people we spoke with told us that they were happy with the accommodation, some said their room had been redecorated or a new carpet had been laid. We observed that there had been a lot of improvements to the environment.

People we spoke with told us that they received their medicines at the right times. They said the staff made sure they took them safely.

We observed that house meetings were publicised on the notice board in the dining area. One person we spoke said they had not gone to any house meetings but said they knew these took place.

During a routine inspection

People told us they liked living at the service and they said they were free to make their own decisions and live their lives as they chose. One person said, 'It's all right living here, I have my own room and I get on all right with the staff. I like the deputy she's nice. I like to go out but I also like TV.'

They told us they felt safe at the service and liked the staff. 'I feel quite safe, the staff look after me well. I like most of the staff, some are better than others.'

People felt they received the care they needed and said their health was well looked after.
