During a routine inspection

The registered manager for the home was not available so a manager from another Nottingham Community Housing Association service covered this service two and a half days a week. There was also an assistant manager.

We spoke with two people who used the service and observed the care of others. We also spoke with the manager, assistant manager, two members of staff, one relative and one visiting health care professional.

We saw that staff treated people in a respectful way.

We found the provider protected the rights of people who did not have the capacity to consent, and they acted in accordance with the legal requirements of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA 2005).

One person who used the service told us, 'Nice to live here. They (staff) look after me very good. They are good cooks.' Another person who used the service told us, 'It is very nice living here. It is a nice house. It has been done up.' a relative of a person who used the service told us, 'The care is very good. I can't fault it.'

We saw that all medication was stored securely in locked medicine cabinets and we found there were arrangements in place to protect people against the risks associated with medicines.

We saw that staff meetings were held on a regular basis. However, we found that the provider did not have an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of all aspects of the service.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with three care staff, the deputy manager and the registered manager of the service. We spoke with two people who used the service. It was not possible to speak with other people who used the service due to them having particular communication needs. We spoke with the relatives of four people who used the service.

Both of the people we spoke with who used the service told us they were happy and felt safe living at 134 Ashland Road West. They said they got on well with other people living in the house and they got on with staff.

All of the relatives we spoke with told us they were happy with the care and support their family members received. One relative told us, 'Staff are very polite and respectful.' Another told us, 'I think this is the happiest [relative's name] has been.' Another said, 'The staff are brilliant, I couldn't wish for a better place for [relative's name].'

Relatives told us their family member's health and personal care needs were met well. Also that staff were respectful to their family members.

All of the staff we spoke with told us enjoyed working at 134 Ashland Road West and enjoyed the training and development opportunities provided. One staff member we spoke with told us, 'I feel really privileged working with the people who live here.'

3 January 2012

During a routine inspection

There were 10 people living at the service when we visited on 03 January 2012. We spoke with three residents, five staff and with others who have regular contact with the home to ask for their comments and observations. Some people living at the home either chose not to communicate with us or were unable to verbally communicate their views and experiences to us. We therefore spent a period of time, sitting with a group of people in a communal area. We were able to observe people's experiences of living at the home and their interactions with each other and with the staff.

Our observations indicated that people had a positive experience at the home, the atmosphere was calm and friendly and the staff were attentive and enabling.
