During a routine inspection

'5* treatment'

'this one shone, it's like home'

One healthcare professional told us that when people are moving into the service they are asked what their favourite meal is and are told that they will have it ready for them when they move in.

'activities programme is very regular and good'

'lovely place very happy'

One relative spoke about the staff - 'just been brilliant'

Another person told us that they visit every day to have lunch with their relative who lives at the home and then spend the afternoon there. They said that they have been made to feel very welcome.

We spoke with one of the activities organisers who told us how activities are organised and showed us records of events at the home. Activities staff have had training to help them understand how to occupy and support the client group in the most effective way. Plans were well underway for the summer fair and people living at the home were being involved in the preparations by wrapping tombola prizes and folding raffle tickets.

During our September 2008 visit these are some of the comments people made: 'They are very quick in responding to health problems. That's comforting.'

'We are always informed when the home arranges for other professionals to see mum. It's really reassuring.'

As part of this review we contacted other healthcare professionals. These are some of the comments they made:

'the care is good'

'loving nursing care, very good for palliative care and continuing care'

'always been very happy with the care'

'(the staff) absolutely love them'

People and their relatives also made positive comments to us about the care they receive. People living at the service told us that they had confidence in the staff and that they knew how to look after them. Relatives told us that they also had confidence in the staff and did not worry when they could not visit. They said:

'lovely girls'

'so dedicated and caring'

As part of our September 2008 inspection we sent out surveys.

Information received from people who use the service was very positive about the staff group.

They said, 'They can't do enough for me. They are very respectful and helpful.'

'Mum thinks the staff are lovely. They always make sure she is dressed well and that her clothes are always clean.'

At this visit people living at the service told us that they had confidence in the staff. We saw that staff had good rapport with people living at the service and their relatives.
