People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 19 November 2012 and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.

Reasons for our judgement

The Dietitian told us that the Registered Manager no longer worked at the clinic. The service was managed by a Clinic Manager, who was supported by the Principal Dietitian, a Cosmetic Surgery Coordinator and a Nurse. There were also three cosmetic surgeons, an Obesity Specialist and a Nurse Consultant who worked as consultants but were not permanently based at the clinic.

The provider had a number of policies in place which provided staff with guidance relating to staff recruitment, conduct and disciplinary and grievance procedures. Staff were also issued with a staff handbook when they commenced employment.

The Dietitian told us that during recruitment, they obtained two references and carried out full enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure checks on new recruits before they commenced employment. The CRB checks were updated every three years. Staff did not commence employment until the provider had completed the relevant checks.

During the visit, we looked at two staff files, which showed that CRB checks had been carried out and references had been obtained before staff commenced employment. The Dietitian told us that staff files were reviewed on a regular basis to check that they were up to date and accurate.
