People should be safe from harm from unsafe or unsuitable equipment (outcome 11)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are not at risk of harm from unsafe or unsuitable equipment (medical and non-medical equipment, furnishings or fittings).
  • Benefit from equipment that is comfortable and meets their needs.

How this check was done

We reviewed all the information we hold about this provider and carried out a visit on 30/01/2012.

Our judgement

Overall the provider was meeting this outcome. The service has arrangements in place to protect service users from the risk of harm from unsafe or unsuitable equipment.

User experience

There were no service users attending for consultation on the day of our visit, so we were not able to seek their views.

Other evidence

During our visit we observed that, as this location is used for consultation purposes, there were very few items of medical equipment. All electrical equipment had been safety tested and labeled.

The provider has a designated facilities manager who manages the planned preventative maintenance programme across the organisation in accordance with the planned preventative maintenance policy.

The provider has a central ordering and supplies department which ensures all equipment is purchased in accordance with the supplies ordering policy.

Medical devices and medical and healthcare regulatory agency (MHRA) alerts are managed by the provider's governance and risk department, in accordance with the safety alert policy. The manager told us that if an alert required action by the clinic the clinic manager was advised of the relevant action to take and associated timescales. We saw that quarterly MHRA reports are provided to the governance and risk Committee. Minutes from the Committee are circulated to clinic managers and posted on the staff intranet site.
