People should be given the medicines they need when they need them, and in a safe way (outcome 9)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Will have their medicines at the times they need them, and in a safe way.
  • Wherever possible will have information about the medicine being prescribed made available to them or others acting on their behalf.

How this check was done

We reviewed all the information we hold about this provider and carried out a visit on 02/02/2012.

Our judgement

The management of medication is personalised and regular checks help to maintain safety in this area. Good systems and storage facilities are now in place to ensure medication is handled correctly.

User experience

There were no specific comments made by people who use the service with regards to this outcome.

Other evidence

The person in charge who is a trained nurse showed us the medication procedure. We

looked at the medication records of a resident we had spoken to and examined records.

Safe practices were being followed and the correct records of medication kept.

Procedures have been improved following consultation with the owner and

recommendations made by us the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

We had a look around the medication room and found storage facilities for medication were now locked. Only trained nurses had access to medication and administered medicines to people living at the home. The person in charge said, "Myself and other nurses are the only people responsible for administering medication."
