All Inspections

31 August 2011

During a routine inspection

As part of this review we spent time observing people who using the service. People who live at the home had communication difficulties. We saw people interacting with staff or engaging in their own activities. Observations indicated that people were treated by staff with respect and dignity. Staff used different means of communication or "objects of reference" such as touching, or making people feel objects to make choices or decisions. Staff told us they knew people's needs and how to communicate with them because they had worked with them for many years.

Some of the people using the service were in the garden with staff while others were in the home. We saw each person had their own bedroom. The communal areas were spacious and there were suitable facilities for people to use.

People using the service appeared to be happy and relaxed. Staff treated people with respect and dignity. People were not hurried when being supported by staff. We saw staff interacting with people in a friendly and caring manner.
