People should be safe from harm from unsafe or unsuitable equipment (outcome 11)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are not at risk of harm from unsafe or unsuitable equipment (medical and non-medical equipment, furnishings or fittings).
  • Benefit from equipment that is comfortable and meets their needs.

How this check was done

Our judgement

People have appropriate equipment to support their mobility; however staff have not received appropriate training in risk assessments and the moving and handling of people.

User experience

We saw that people had appropriate mobility aids and staff were seen to check equipment was within easy reach of the owner, but did not become a trip hazard for others.

Other evidence

The provider had purchased a health and safety assessment pack which contains procedures and blank templates for monitoring and assessing risk. Despite this new purchase the acting manager/nominated individual had not implemented any new systems and documents seen, including the environmental risk assessment were blank.

The steep mobility ramp leading from the ground floor bedrooms to the small lounge had been altered since our last visit. This alteration had reduced the risk of injury to people who use services and staff supporting them.

Staff had not received appropriate training in risk assessments and lifting and manual handling. The manager stated that they were aware this was needed and this would be arranged for the near future.
