Staff should be properly trained and supervised, and have the chance to develop and improve their skills (outcome 14)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 28 February 2013, talked with people who use the service and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

Reasons for our judgement

Staff were able, from time to time, to obtain further relevant qualifications. All staff completed the Skills for Care Induction when they started and they accessed training in first aid; medication administration; health and safety; working with people with challenging behaviour and the Mental Capacity Act which they said helped them to do their job. Arrangements had been made for staff to attend a training session on fire safety.

Staff meetings were held every three months, although due to it being a small home with a few members of staff the daily handover ensured staff were updated with important information.

Supervision took place and staff said that they felt supported in their work. We saw an observation was made of staff interaction with people who use the service, this was used partly as quality assurance so the provider was assured staff were following policies and procedures and respecting individuals and to identify good practice and any future training needs. A new appraisal system had been developed with the process due to be completed in March and April.

People who use the service said there were enough staff to give them the support they needed. Staff said there were enough staff to support the people who lived there.
