During a routine inspection

When we visited, one person was living in the home. We spoke with the person and the manager. Following our visit we spoke with a member of care staff who worked at the service and someone from the local authority who pays for the person's care.

The person told us they were well cared for. They said, 'It's nice. I've lived here a long time.'

The person was able to self-administer their own medicines. The manager had procedures in place to make sure this was done safely.

The person was supported, in the main, by the manager. Additional help was provided by a member of care staff who was also available if an emergency arose.

Records were kept securely and maintained appropriately.

People told us they were involved in making decisions about the care and support they received. They said their privacy and dignity was respected and their independence was promoted. For example, they said they could go out whenever they wanted.

People told us that they had lived in the home a long time and it was like a family. They said they would feel comfortable to tell the manager if they had any problems.

We found the arrangements in place to ensure the availability of staff to work at the home in unexpected circumstances, for example in emergencies, was not properly planned for. This could put people at risk.

Staff said they were well supported by the manager and had never had to raise any issues. Staff commented, 'It's like a little family here really.'

People we spoke with said they were able to pursue their own interests, liked living at the home and felt safe. We saw for example, photographs of people taken during days out, having visits from their families and friends and with their pets.

We saw individual records are kept about people's needs but we found these were not up to date or well organised in some instances, which could pose a risk to people.

During a routine inspection

During our review of the service and our visit to the home we spoke with two people, one person who worked at the home and the registered manager. We also spoke to the local authority who provided support in reviewing some aspects of the care that was provided by the manager.

We saw that support was being provided for two people within a family environment. The people said they had lived there for a number of years and told us they had always been happy and liked living at the home.

The people also told us that they led a fairly independent life style and enjoyed doing a range of activities which included; going into the local town, going to day centres and social events and having regular trips and holidays.

People told us they did this either independently or with the manager, their family and two staff members who the manager had employed to support them.

One person talked about the things they did saying, 'We get out a lot. There are day centres and shops and trips that we sort out together.'

People told us they felt safe and talked to us about the direct care and support they received with one person saying, 'They look after me all the time. It feels just like home and it is my home. I don't want to live anywhere else.'

We observed that the manager and carers provided support in a sensitive, helpful and friendly way. We also saw that they treated people with respect, whilst maintaining a positive and happy atmosphere throughout the home.
