During an inspection looking at part of the service

Since our last inspection the provider had sent us an action plan showing how they intended to improve the service and achieve compliance with the regulations.

There were two people in the service at the time of our inspection and five people were out at day centres or other activities. The people with spoke with told us that they liked the redecoration that had been done.

We found the home to be generally clean, tidy and free from unpleasant odours. The provider had taken steps to ensure that people who used the service were protected from the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises.

We found that the training needs of the staff had been identified and staff were receiving the necessary training and skills to make sure they undertook their roles as safely and effectively as possible at Bradford House.

We found that records were being retained in a more organised manner and that a policy had been put in place to ensure that records were kept for the appropriate period of time and then destroyed securely.

During a routine inspection

We made an unannounced visit to the service and spoke with people using the service, the registered provider and staff members. There were seven people using the service at the time of our visit.

We observed the interactions between people and staff. We observed how people reacted and responded to see if people indicated they were happy, bored, discontented, angry or sad.

People were relaxed and responsive in the company of staff. They were able to let staff know what they wanted and we saw staff respond in a caring and positive way.

We saw that people were given opportunities to make choices and were supported to act on their choices.

People who use the service told us that they were happy at Bradford House. One person told us, 'I like it here and I feel safe'. Another commented, 'I enjoy going to the centre and I like gardening. There is always lots to do here'.

Staff showed us around the home and grounds. The home was free from unpleasant odours. However, we found that the premises were not adequately maintained.

We found that staff had not received appropriate professional development.

Systems were in place to monitor the service that people received to ensure that the service was satisfactory and safe.

We found that records were secured securely and could be located promptly, however, we found that records were not securely destroyed when it was appropriate to do so.
