During a routine inspection

Some of the people who lived at Drummonds had complex needs and were unable to speak with us. This meant that people were not able to tell us about their experiences. Some people communicated with us using gestures and facial expressions and this helped us understand their experiences. We also observed how people spent their time and noted how they interacted with other people who lived in the home and with staff.

We saw that staff treated people with respect and encouraged them to make choices and express their views. It was evident that staff knew people well and were caring in the way they supported people.

We looked at the care records of four people who used the service. They detailed the individual needs of the person and contained risk assessments to minimise any risks present during day-to-day activities.

We saw that staff received appropriate training which was specific to the needs of people who used the service. Measures were in place to assess the standard of care provided.

The environment at Drummonds was homely and people's bedrooms were decorated according to their individual wishes and preferences.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection on 14 March 2013 we observed that staff treated people with respect and that there were good relationships between the staff and the people who lived at the home. One person said, "Staff are friendly and they do their job very well." Another person said, 'The staff are really nice to us. I am very happy here' and 'It's nice living here, the staff really listen to us.'

Care records contained adequate detail about people's specific needs and were written in a way that focussed positively on people's strengths and abilities. People told us their healthcare needs were met by community based healthcare professionals, such as the doctor, an optician and dentists. Medicines were appropriately managed, so that people received their medicines safely, and as prescribed.

Staff had received a range of suitable training to enable them to provide the type of support that people needed. Support for staff was provided through regular supervision and training. We observed that care staff continuously interacted with the people in a considerate, kind and respectful manner.

The home has had various modifications to make the environment more homely. There were wide corridors that were suitable for people living at the home who used wheelchairs. Some areas of the home were in need of redecoration, although a system of continuous maintenance was in place, which ensured that improvement to the environment had been carried out.

During a routine inspection

People with whom we spoke told us that they played an active part in the running of Drummonds. They said that 'Nothing happens here without us being consulted with about it first.'

People told us that many of them are members of committees that include staff recruitment and service development. They made it very clear that their roles on these committees are valued, and their views are very much listened to and acted upon.

People with whom we spoke told us that Drummonds is very person focussed and that they are at the centre of everything that happens there. The philosophy of the service, they told us, is to 'do with, not do to.'
