During a routine inspection

We spoke with people who use the service who told us that the care staff consistently delivered a good quality service. One person who uses the service told us that they felt very comfortable 'Staff were lovely, very kind'. One relative we spoke with told us that 'The staff were dedicated and very kind'. People's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan. The registered manager was unavailable on the day of the inspection. We were assisted by the deputy manager and chief executive through the inspection process.

A new bespoke electronic care planning system was being introduced into the home in February 2014. We were told that staff were updating the new electronic care planning system; the benefits of the system would improve management and quality assurance processes in the home.

We observed during the inspection the care and assistance that the staff gave to people who use the service. People told us that there were enough staff and they were nice and treated them well. We saw that there were sufficient staff throughout the lunch that were able to assist people who needed help. The staff we observed helping people using the service were calm and respectful, they promoted peoples independence and choices.

During a routine inspection

We observed and spoke to residents on both units within the home, including discussions with four residents and their visitors over the lunch period on the nursing unit; we also interviewed two residents in more detail. People told us they were happy in this home, and believed the home was well thought of in the local area. They told us staff treated residents well and that care planning arrangements ensured residents were involved in making decisions about their care.

We were told there were plenty of activities if people wished to join in, and residents said the home was kept clean and tidy, including during the current extensive and ongoing building works. We received some mixed comments about the food, which we passed on to the management who were already aware of the concerns about food and were addressing these.
